Dr. Steven R. Goldstein MD is a Gynecologist in NYC and is also one of the most highly recognized and regarded
individuals in the field of vaginal probe ultrasounds.
As a Gynecologist
in NYC, Dr. Goldstein sees patients who have been told they have
ovarian cysts, which is a very non-specific term. Such references usually refer
to a fluid filled structure within the ovary of the patient.
Each month a healthy
premenopausal patient forms a 2 ½ centimeter “cyst”, which is the dominant
follicle prior to ovulation. If ovulation does not take place and this follicle
enlarges, it becomes known as a “follicular cyst.” This is not a tumor (benign
or malignant) and does not require any intervention. In addition, benign
ovarian structures do not become malignant. This is not the same as in
the cervix, breast, or uterine lining where there are well-defined pre-cancer
changes that will ultimately “cross the line.” Thus, many women who are told
they have an ovarian cyst want it out “before it becomes cancer.” Such benign
growths do not become cancer.
If you have been told that you
have an ovarian cyst, Dr Goldstein an evaluate you with a transvaginal
ultrasound and color Doppler ultrasound to determine whether the cyst is
suspicious, needs surgical removal or should be left alone. The ultrasounds are
non-invasive, painless and done right in the office in a few minutes.
Throughout his career Dr
Goldstein has advocated for non-invasive procedures like transvaginal
ultrasounds and Sonohysterography for diagnosis of a condition instead of
painful procedures like Dilation and Curettage (D&C) and blind endometrial
biopsies.
For example in 1989, Dr Goldstein
was the first to suggest that simple cysts of postmenopausal ovaries were
benign and did not require surgical intervention. In 2009 that became the
standard of care.
Dr Goldstein is not just a Gynecologist in NYC, he is highly
regarded in the field of diagnostic ultrasound, having authored several
textbooks on the topic. He is currently the Director of Gynecologic Ultrasound
at NYU Langone Medical Center and a past President of the American Institute of
Ultrasound in Medicine.
