Bioidentical Hormones – Are They Safer: Dr. Steven R. Goldstein MD

Dr Steven R Goldstein MD is an expert on female hormone replacement therapy. He has worked with thousands of women in menopause to explain the symptoms and changes their body is going through and the effect of a lack of estrogen on their bodies. Dr Goldstein does not recommend the use of bioidentical hormones for several reasons.

The problem with most bioidentical hormones is that it is compounded or made up by a pharmacist with the guise that it will be special for you, sometimes doing salivary testing for your levels. Unlike thyroid disease, this is really not based on levels it is based on symptoms.

When something is produced pharmaceutically the FDA has control over its manufacture. If people truly want bioidentical hormones, in other words the hormones that were made before they were menopausal, these can be prescribed pharmaceutically and quality controlled. But there are different kinds of estrogens. Some of these estrogens are safer than others. The Bioidentical movement doesn’t come with any package insert and it is not any safer than traditional hormones.

Bioidentical hormone therapy, sometimes called BHT, is really a misnomer. It’s really sad there are so many patients who believe that this is a safer way to get hormone therapy. Many of the doctors who promote this are also involved in the anti-aging movement.

All of us who are leaders in the menopause field and familiar with female hormone replacement therapy have had a handful of patients who have developed uterine cancers on these bioidentical hormones because there wasn’t enough progesterone to protect the uterus.

If you are already experiencing the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, foggy memory, vaginal dryness and so on and are interested in learning how female hormone replacement therapy can help you then arrange for a consultation with Dr Goldstein by contacting his office in New York City or visiting www.goldsteinmd.com
